Eighth Crash [Action/Voice]

{In today's episode Ginji can be found refilling a metal dish suspended from a tree with seed and peanuts. If you guessed "bird feeder", give yourself ten points! After making sure the feeder's still attached securely to its branch, Ginji will make himself comfortable on the lawn and pull out his journal. He'll sit there for a while, enjoying the fresh air and the milder weather, before starting a new entry.]

Hey everyone. So...what's it like for you back home? Do you come from a large family or a small one? Have you set out on your own or still live with your parents? Got any siblings? Kids?

I'd like to know.

[After the voice post is finished, he'll spend the next few hours watching any animals that might wander over to the feeder and run through a few sketches of different wing shapes.]

[Ginji laughs quietly.] Probably. Most of the ones I know are like that, too.

And there are a couple who've got everyone convinced they're still little kids.

[Sure is. He's trying not to laugh at that. The result is something between a smile and a grin. He's never seen anyone apologize to birds, though he has seen people talk to them before.]

It's no bother. Actually, I find it easier to work when it's not too quiet.

Were you looking for something? [Or someplace might be a little more accurate since she was passing by the front lawn.]

Something like that ... They really like going on trips without me, so I rarely ever get to see them anymore. I've been traveling a lot lately too, so that probably isn't helping very much either.

It's all carefully kept track of, but having a couple of cousins doesn't quite relieve me of the burden from my mother to carry on the family line, you know?

That seems to increase in frequency as they get older, doesn't it?

Sounds like he helps people manage their money, doesn't it? [He laughs apologetically.] Sorry, I don't really know much about banks either.

That's right. He runs maintenance on the ships coming into and leaving port. And sometimes he goes with a whole group of folks who get called off to fix broken down land dreadnoughts. We're pretty crazy about machines where I'm from. Most of us, anyway.

Sure does. It peaks around seventy five or so.

[There's a moment's hesitation. It's true that life in Luceti hasn't always been the easiest, but Ginji's managed all right despite the bumps and turbulence. Lately, though, and what with being turned into a little kid, his mind's started wandering. He knows it's unlikely that anyone at home will realize he's gone, but it doesn't stop him from missing them. His family, and all the other familiar (if slightly eccentric) faces.]

Oh, I'll be all right. Just a little homesick is all.

Not exactly. I was exploring. Luceti is a large region, after all!

You grow to accommodate the homesickness...but it never really goes away.

Crazy about machines, huh? That sounds like a friend of mine! Not a friend back home, but still. She's pretty into machines and stuff, too.

But...what's a dreadnought?

I believe you already know the answer, regarding my family.

[Nevertheless she is smiling a little, if only because she could empathize with Ginji a bit.]

I'm alone. My parents live overseas.

[Well technically she has Fin Fish, but that's... probably something she shouldn't mention. :\a]

Having friends here does make it easier. But you're right. I don't think two people have to be related in any way to be like family to each another. Just looking around is proof enough.

Sorry. Carrying on the family line's never been a huge deal at our place. Mostly it's just figuring out who's going to take care of everyone when they get older and who's going to manage our projects. For some of my friends it might be a little different, since they come from noble families and all.

But I imagine it could get pretty frustrating.

[Right! Not that Ginji would know. He's never met a Pokemon before.]

That's true enough. There's a lot of forest around the village, and if you go far enough east-northeast there're a bunch of mountains and eventually the ocean.

Probably not. [Still kind of sad, though.]

Seems like traveling always takes longer than you think it will, because there's always something else to see or do. Before you know it, a week becomes a month, then two or three.

Yeah, I didn't really think it would...

It was a lot easier on Auldrant, though. Even if we were on the other side of the world, I always knew I could technically fly back home if I had to. [But he never did, of course, because what they were doing was far too important.]

[Ah, Tear. Van's been in Luceti and disappeared twice now, hasn't he? That's got to be harder than a sibling vanishing just once. And besides, Ginji still has family to go home to. After everyone finishes what they have to do on Eldrant, though...]

Yes. It was just you and your brother, and then Governor Teodoro, right?

[Not if she wants to keep her reincarnated historical figure/magical girl-thief identity a secret, no.]

You mean you were left there all by yourself?

[She's got to be somewhere around Noelle's age, and while that's old enough for a person to take care of herself, having no family to come home to is a pretty depressing thought.]

So someone here? What's her name?

[Hmmm... how to explain.] A dreadnought's like a battleship. Some of them travel on the water like a boat, and others - land dreadnoughts - have the ability to travel over both water and land. They still can't clear cliffs or mountains, though. You'd need an airship for that.

[Oh sweetie.] ...Thanks, I'd like that. By the way, I'm Ginji. It won't really do to be family if we don't know what to call each other, huh? And you're right. They're all good people. [He doesn't doubt it, despite...some unfortunate things that happened...and Asch being cranky about 75% of the time. That's a generous estimate.]

[Ginji laughs at this.] Yeah, there's Sokka for you! He is pretty great. [And listening to him talk like he's been everywhere and done everything is always amusing. In a good way.]

Well, that stinks, since the rule of flying is that it's supposed to be fun. The Albiore is. I got to travel all around the world with Mr. Asch and [a trio of wanted criminals, actually] these guys from the Black Dream - it's a circus troupe. And I do miss it. It's kind of too bad, though. The last time I saw my ship, she was in pretty bad shape. It'll be a while before I can fix her back up.

Oh yeah, definitely. Sometimes, when I go out to collect materials for my work, I get so caught up that I don't come back to town for almost a month!

It's easy to do that. What kind of materials do you go looking for?

People have the ability to connect to one another. That, I think is an incredible thing. You got anyone like that here?

Yeah! Her name is Precis. She's like, really good with machines and stuff! She even built an elevator in her house...!

A battleship, huh? And some of them can travel on land...so it's like...a tankboat or something!

[She isn't entirely sure that's the right word for it, but she remembers reading about something along those lines in her history book back home.]
