Eighth Crash [Action/Voice]

{In today's episode Ginji can be found refilling a metal dish suspended from a tree with seed and peanuts. If you guessed "bird feeder", give yourself ten points! After making sure the feeder's still attached securely to its branch, Ginji will make himself comfortable on the lawn and pull out his journal. He'll sit there for a while, enjoying the fresh air and the milder weather, before starting a new entry.]

Hey everyone. So...what's it like for you back home? Do you come from a large family or a small one? Have you set out on your own or still live with your parents? Got any siblings? Kids?

I'd like to know.

[After the voice post is finished, he'll spend the next few hours watching any animals that might wander over to the feeder and run through a few sketches of different wing shapes.]

That's right! It's a really science-y process, so I'm not surprised to hear you're not familiar with it. Most people aren't from what I understand.

Yes he did, though it was few and far in between. When I joined the Oracle Knights there was very little change regarding how often I saw him.

[There's a brief pause as she mulls over how to best answer Ginji's question. While there had undoubtedly been enough people in the city that there would almost always be company, at the same time...] Not very many compared to cities on the surface, but there were other children. However, my brother and I were most often each other's only companion.

[ omg a secret tunnel. tourist senses perking! ]

[Hearing the noise going on nearby, Asch follows the sound and the voice to head closer, lips pursing. What in the world...?]

Mm. I did. ...What are you doing out here? Where'd all these birds come from?

[...Uh oh.]

Well, you know that one old tree that was just sort of hanging out back here by itself? The branches were too short and too thin to support anything really heavy, so I thought I'd make something for the birds instead.

[At least he's trying to figure animals out. Plants, unfortunately, will just have to fend for themselves.]

What do you think? I guess they told their friends there was food out here.

[What's all this 'sir' business? He smiles.] It's Ginji.

And I guess you pick up a few things after you've been here for a while. Knowing the terrain's always been important to me.

Mr. Ginji, then. I'm Platina, a new feather. I hope to learn more about this place too!

Your little sister? I'm sorry t' hear you can't be with her, but from what I've gathered, it may actually be for the best?

Why's it girls only? [He's not offended, merely curious since women can do man's work in Sheridan if they want to. Just like there are guys who work in the tavern and the hotel (or go off exploring with their dogs...) rather than as blacksmiths or engineers or what have you.]

Well, if my Grandfather can be believed, he used to make it sound like the professors had to get on their knees and beg him to enroll there.

...But he liked to exaggerate. [Ginji doesn't believe it really happened that way.]

And I think it might be called the Royal Academy because it's located in the country's capital where the king and princess live.

[Well, technically...]

I'll agree with you, there - it's a little confusing, isn't it? I'd be 21 back on Auldrant, but because the years are about twice as long as the ones here, that'd make me around 42 years old. [He pauses for a moment, then just kind of laughs.] I guess I don't look quite that old, though. [Because they age at half the rate of normal people, it seems like. And he has a baby face besides. ~~And his mun totally had to guess at an age because what are minor characters.~~]

[Whoa, words and questions. Ginji, you're going to have to talk faster if you plan on keeping up with this kid!] Yeah, fon machines're pretty much the same as normal ones! Except they run on fonons instead of electricity or batteries. So, while they're constructed a bit differently, they do some of the same kinds of things - like elevators, for example, and computers. The fon belt is there to filter fonons around the planet.

Well, it sounds exciting! So a lot of these tricks were with bending fire and water around. [He only knows a little bit about the whole bending thing, but it seems somewhat comparable to fonic artes. Maybe.] And these performers who swing way up in the air were just normal people, huh?

Yes. I wouldn't wish being kidnapped on anyone. Least of all my sister.

You really never know what they'll do to you.

"The Lillian Rose Academy for Young Ladies: A private institution where girls can learn in an environment free of gender stereotypes that may hamper their education." ...That's what it said in the booklet, anyway.

Your grandfather sounds kinda funny...! Mine's kind grouchy most of the time.

[She giggles a little before giving his next statement some thought for a moment. A big fancy academy in the capital where the king and princess live...]

B-But if it's in a place like that then it has to be a pretty big deal right?! But I'm guessing the princess probably doesn't go there...royalty and people like that usually have private tutors and stuff, huh...?

[Not that she really knows anything about royalty. She's just assuming based on what she knows from story books and movies.]

I don't know what to think, it's not like I can see it.

[He glances around anyway, though, following the sound of the birds.]

Why are you so interested in the birds all of a sudden?

Have you ever been... ah, had it happen to you?

It wasn't so awful, but it's still kind of jarring. They send these machines out to fetch you and... it's hard to remember the exact details, but I think they must've given me something.

A friend's told me about 'em. Droids, I think they were called.

[ Keeping up with Ikki is a goal so few pursue. She listens to the explanation, fascinated. Other worlds are so WEIRD man. ] Sooooo fonons are like batteries and electricity?

Yep! They were! I guess maybe a long, long time ago there might've been air nomads in circuses, but there're only five of us now if you count Korra, soooooo there aren't any in circuses now. I mean, unless one of us joined one, I guess!

I guess your cousin gets into lots of trouble, then.

[The world needs more people of this type to play witness.]

And I've been here since November of last year. Come to think of it, November will be around again pretty soon, won't it?

That's right. And I'm Ginji, by the way.

Oh no, I'm fine. Afterwards I spent about a week as a kid, and then things went back to normal.

Makes sense.

But, well, if it's really sciencey, I wouldn't mind learning more about it.

[Ginji tries to keep any trace of amusement out of his voice, but his tone is still light. Really, Asch, why look around when you just reminded him you can't see any of it?]

But you can still have an opinion about the idea. After all, it's not like you have to be able to see to use your head.

[Huh. Mmn...] It's been kind of quiet lately, you know? And birds always sound pretty cheerful, even when the weather's bad. I figured it might help.

Sounds like it's a problem. Do people still expect girls to stay at home and take care of all the domestic details where you're from?

[Ginji smiles.] Actually, he was both! But I don't think he tried to be funny most of the time - it just sort of happened whenever he went on one of his tirades or got into an argument with someone. Well, it got pretty tiring, too. Having to break those guys apart.

Well, sure. It's still prestigious, I guess. Most of the people who go there are known in their fields. But the princess only visits now and again for special events. Grandfather said she came to one of their class reunions and everyone was talking about it. Guards and everything.

Yeah, helping them is the least I can do. But it doesn't stop bad things from happening to them...

[Wow, that came out unintentionally pessimistic.]

Sorry, Nephry. That's not the best attitude to take, is it? I've just had a lot on my mind.

Sounds like your friend's family are really great people.

And jobs like that can be tough... Depending on the nature of the work and the scale, sometimes it takes a long time to finish up. But your parents do keep in touch and come to visit you every once in a while, don't they?
