Eighth Crash [Action/Voice]

{In today's episode Ginji can be found refilling a metal dish suspended from a tree with seed and peanuts. If you guessed "bird feeder", give yourself ten points! After making sure the feeder's still attached securely to its branch, Ginji will make himself comfortable on the lawn and pull out his journal. He'll sit there for a while, enjoying the fresh air and the milder weather, before starting a new entry.]

Hey everyone. So...what's it like for you back home? Do you come from a large family or a small one? Have you set out on your own or still live with your parents? Got any siblings? Kids?

I'd like to know.

[After the voice post is finished, he'll spend the next few hours watching any animals that might wander over to the feeder and run through a few sketches of different wing shapes.]

I guess it might be different in other cities, but there isn't so much of that in Sheridan. Then again, we're a pretty mixed bunch. My sister's just as good a pilot as I am, and she's pretty handy with mechanical repairs, too. And then there's Tamara...she could whip up things like you wouldn't believe! She once constructed a flamethrower entirely out of scrap metal and spare parts. [He sounds a little proud of this. It was a pretty awesome contraption, okay.]

[Ginji just chuckles at this. Grandparents sure are something.]

Yeah, you've got a point. Princess Natalia's a really nice person, though. It's easy to forget she's the princess.

I see. While we were staying together, I got the impression that he's a really smart man. [Maybe too smart. It always felt, whenever he came into the house, like he was encroaching on Van's territory. He really seemed to own the place. Not that he was threatening or anything exactly...he was better at cooking than either he or Arietta were, and he even revived some of the dying plants.]

What about everyone else? Do you see them as a kind of family?

I do! One of the members of my team is a bird, after all.

[ his sketches catch her attention, WHAT ARE THOSE. ]

Are you studying them, too?

Both, actually! I always start with the hands-on approach first, though. You can learn the basics from a book too, but it's usually better to learn by doing when you're first starting out! After that, I usually have them study from books instead.

They are! They've watched out for me for about ten years now. If it weren't for them, I'd be pretty lonely.

[That last bit makes her fall silent. When she does reply, she's sounding... cheery, about the whole thing.] Oh, no, not really. I don't think I've heard from them since they left! They're probably really busy, so I can't blame them.

Whoah! That's amazing...! When you said you were all crazy about machines, you weren't kidding, huh?

Ah! So you've like, met her and stuff?!

[For someone from a world where movie stars and political figures share a similar status, she just finds this really cool.]

[Like he needs permission to decorate the yard of his own house. ...Then again, it's Asch. You never know with him.]

I doubt it. He can't even catch his own tail, nevermind a bird. I'll just tell him they can breathe fire like Star and he'll leave them alone.

That's true. I suppose that's what happens when you're friends with good folks.

[And here Ginji was under the impression this whole arrangement was temporary. Now it's his house? Huh. Learn something new every day!]

Well, I guess that'd work. And they do look like they could take off on a 10 gald piece. [Not like he knows, but it sounds like the cat's coordination isn't too great. The world of pets sure is mysterious, and it'll never make too much sense to him unless there's a pet out there you have to oil.]

[But as nice as all this is, since Asch is being noticeably less depressing.]

So what are you up to? Going for a walk today, Mr. Asch?

Maybe something will present itself. Life here is never too predictable.

[Oh, those. Ginji'll offer her the notebook so she can see them better if she wants to.]

That's right. Mostly I'm studying the shape of their wings, though, and how they fly. I'm hoping to use the results to design a working kite.

[Ginji laughs briefly. Here they go again.] ...Oh boy. Well, I've heard them compared to pressure points before. They're specific areas that absorb fonons. Kind of like how your skin absorbs sunlight. Some people can use these fonons to perform fonic artes...I guess that'd be something similar to how you guys can bend things. But since I'm not a fonist, I wouldn't be able to tell you how to do all that. Sorry, Ikki.

[Yes. Yes they're just really special in fonic ways. They're fontastic.]

So they did horrible things to everyone just because they didn't like one person? But why? What'd he do to make them feel that way?

[Hold on. She did just say over a hundred years ago, right? That is one old grandfather.]

Well, yes. She was part of the group who rescued me, so I've talked with her a few times. Actually, Princess Natalia was staying here in Luceti for a while, but she isn't now.

Yes, I've always liked the hands-on approach myself, but there are some things you just can't get your hands on and some conditions you can't necessarily recreate. For mechanics, I mean. But I expect it's the same for alchemy too, sometimes.

And I'm guessing certain things are easier to make than others, right? Is that based more off of scale, complexity, or the number of different components it takes to put something together?

[ she beams as she leans over to examine the field notes, these are neat! ]

That's fascinating! But... you want to build one from scratch, instead of buying one?

In my world, as looooooong as anyone can remember, there've always been four nations, just like there're four types of benders: the Air Nomads, the Fire Nation, the Earth Kingdom, and the Water Tribes! Before Republic City and the Harmony Restoration Movement, they were really, really separate. Keeping balance between them - and between the Spirit World and our world! - is something the Avatar has to do.

The Avatar is a spirit that is born into our world in a loooong cycle. Air, water, earth, fire. The spirit of the Avatar is reincarnated into the next nation in the cycle when it dies. The Avatar is the only person who can bend all four elements, not just one! ...They have to do four times the training, though, haha.

Anyway, over a hundred and seventy years ago, the Fire Nation was led by someone called Fire Lord Sozin. He decided that he wanted to unite all the nations under the Fire Nation, and he knew that the Avatar wasn't going to stand by and let him do that, 'cause stopping that sort of thing is kind of the whole job description! So when the old Avatar, a Fire Nation Avatar, died, he took his chance to prepare an attack. He wanted to wipe out the new Avatar before he had a chance to become a full Avatar, y'know?

Grandpa was twelve when that happened. He escaped the air nomad genocide - if he hadn't, I wouldn't be alive! - and eventually he managed to defeat Fire Lord Ozai.

...Y'see, he escaped by being trapped in ice for a century, sooooooooo time stuff.

Yes. They're the best kind of folks.

No. No, I guess you can't. [Is she saying she hasn't heard anything from her parents in ten whole years? That... Even for a super busy family, that doesn't seem exactly normal. Nor does sounding cheerful about it. Maybe she's just trying to look on the bright side?]

[So for that reason Ginji won't pry further.]

Well, how about here? It's been a while since you arrived. How've you been getting along since then?

Um ... wellll, it's mostly the complex part and how hard it is to get certain ingredients for the item you're making. The easier to make stuff uses lots of easy to find ingredients, and usually leaves lots of room for mistakes too, even if it's still possible to totally mess up. But the harder stuff can be a little ... dangerous. To make things worse, they usually use super hard to find ingredients, too. So if you mess up, you'll need to start over again. ... Aaaaand your workshop might be on fire, too.

Crazily enough, yeah.

Amazing! So it would be something like a glider, then?

[Clearly Ginji just needs a robot dog or something.]

No. I was tired of sitting around inside, so I thought I'd go out for a little while. [He hesitates, then adds somewhat defensively,] If I'm going to be in the way...

[Whoa. Whoa. WHOA. Ginji raises his hands defensively.]

...What? [He sounds genuinely perplexed by this reaction.] No need to get mad; that's not what I'm saying at all. I was just curious since you've been-- [uh-oh, better word this carefully.] well, not exactly like yourself.

[Like... double dosage of moodiness, maybe?]
