Eighth Crash [Action/Voice]

{In today's episode Ginji can be found refilling a metal dish suspended from a tree with seed and peanuts. If you guessed "bird feeder", give yourself ten points! After making sure the feeder's still attached securely to its branch, Ginji will make himself comfortable on the lawn and pull out his journal. He'll sit there for a while, enjoying the fresh air and the milder weather, before starting a new entry.]

Hey everyone. So...what's it like for you back home? Do you come from a large family or a small one? Have you set out on your own or still live with your parents? Got any siblings? Kids?

I'd like to know.

[After the voice post is finished, he'll spend the next few hours watching any animals that might wander over to the feeder and run through a few sketches of different wing shapes.]

Back home it's just me and Daddy. Well, I have my grandparents, too, but they live overseas, so I don't see them much.

Like, not to be rude, but any reason why you're asking?

My family is biiiig! There's me an' Jinora and Meelo and Rohan, that's my older sister and my two little brothers, and then there's mommy and daddy and Oogi and aunt Kya and uncle Bumi and the acolytes count too and then there's GranGran and Korra and loooooots of people!

I still live with my mommy and daddy and siblings 'cause I'm just a kid.

I've got a lot of people who are like family to me. We aren't related by blood, though.

I lived on my own there. Had a pretty nice place, nicer than here.

Family wise it's just me and my mother. Not getting into the mess that's extended family.

[Because when you keep track of every relative you find yourself being three steps from Emperor, and that's a mess Ivan's ignoring.]

No, it's fine. I've just been thinking about home lately, and it got me wondering about everyone else's families.

So you and your dad must be really close, huh?

[ With no reason to connect this voice to the adorable mini pilot from before, Susanne will probably repeat facts Ginji already knows. ...even if he... doesn't know it. ]

Our family is a comfortable size. My husband and I have two sons; my brother and niece live nearby.

Wow, you're right. That really is a big family!

Mine isn't nearly as large. There's my mom and pop, and I've got a little sister named Noelle. Then there's Grandpa Aston. He isn't really my grandfather, but they used to be partners.

A lot of times it feels like everyone's a cousin or an uncle, though, just because so many of us work together.

Yes, I think I know what you mean. My grandfather's classmates have always felt like an extra pair of grandparents to me.

And then there are other people you get to know and it starts feeling like they've always been there.

Yeah! We are pretty close! W-Well, I guess? I mean, we don't really get to spend a lot of time together since he's always worked a lot. We don't really get to do a lot of stuff together or anything but...W-well, he is my dad. And it's just been us for a long time.

Ah, sounds like it might be a little complicated, huh? I guess every family tree's got a few tangled branches.

[Yeah, that really does sound like a mess.]

Yep! I've got a lot here, too; there's grandpa, Katara, Uncle Sokka, Aunt Toph, Uncle Roku, Vivi, big brother Ven...Jinora and Korra are here, too! [ Collecting family is basically her part time job, man. ]

I wish I had a little sister! I've only got little brothers - I mean, I love them lots, but I kinda hope there's another girl someday!

What d'you do for work? Is anyone you know here?

[ she missed the journal question in favor of exploring luceti more, and comes across Ginji, accidentally flushing whatever birds might be feeding at the time. ]

Ah... I'm sorry!

[ miight be addressing the birds, she doesn't seem to notice Ginji yet. ]

That's right. I used to have a younger brother, but I lost him years ago.

But the friends I've got now are Family to me. I have to admit I miss them, although I've got a couple of them here with me.

[It might take him a moment, too, having only met her once. But the voice does sound awfully familiar.]

Two sons, huh? They must be a handful.

I understand.

My pop's always busy at the harbor and he has to travel sometimes. So we don't always see him even though we all live together. If you don't mind, what sort of work does your dad do?

My dad's an investment banker! He...um...It's like...

[She's a little embarrassed to admit this, but...]

W-Well, I don't know exactly what he does, but if he has to work so much, it's probably pretty important, I guess. What about your dad? You said he works at a harbor, right? What does he do?

[Ginji looks up from his sketch. He was only about halfway through penciling in the coverts on the leading edge of a bird wing.]

It's all right. I'm sure they'll be back eventually.

[ turning at the voice. whoops a guy is there too! ]

Oh...! I should apologize for disturbing you, too, then.

My family is very small - it's only me, dad, and mom. I don't see them very much anymore, though. [ ... ] Um, back home, I mean.

[He laughs good-naturedly.] Sure sounds like it. None of my family's here, but a lot of my friends are. There's Luke and Mr. Asch, Ion, Tear, Anise, Guy, and some other people from our world I've gotten to meet - like Florian and Arietta, and Nephry.

[He's very liberal with the word "friend".]

Sokka, huh? I actually help out part-time at the smithy with him. But back home I pilot an airship. There's a lot of maintenance involved, so not only do I get to fly it, but we've got a whole team of people who make sure everything's running properly and there aren't any worn or broken parts.

Well, you can be my family, too, if you want. [ GENEROUS OFFER except she makes this to anyone without a family. No one should be alone~~! ] Hmmm! I've talked to Luke and Mr. Asch and Guy before! But I dunno the other people you mentioned. They were all really nice, though!

Really?? Uncle Sokka's GREAT! He's really smart and funny and he gave me chocolate for the first time ever and he beat someone that GRANDPA couldn't beat an' he's been to the moon where you can't eat the stars!

Oooooooh! That sounds really fun! I've only been in an airship - [ ...uh, when her family was captured. 8|a ] - well, I haven't been in a FUN one. D'you miss it?

I have an itinerant brother who can't seem to keep his hands out of trouble despite almost thirty years of experience at getting into it.

[A half-smile. Nephry rarely jokes about Jade like that.]

Well, I hate to say this, but it's been my general observation that grown men and trouble are made for each other.

That's certainly proven true with the grown men that I know. Perhaps it's because they used to be small boys.
