Sixth Crash [Voice/Action]

Hey! It's been pretty hot out this week. [Ginji says this and yet, judging from his cheerful tone, the heat doesn't seem to be bothering him much at all.] If anyone likes ice cream, I've finally got her up and running. I expect there's plenty to go around, though, I should probably warn you it's nothing fancy.

[Of course, that doesn't mean you can't bring your own toppings and turn this homemade dairy product into some fancy shmancy dessert!]

Either way, I promise it's cold.

[So why is he doing this? Because he wants to, and because it's fun. Building things is always fun, especially now that he's got a little more leisure time. Just don't ask about his next project...that one'll be a doozy.]

[Should you choose to hunt this guy out, you'll find him not far from the smithy, seated on a stool beside a sizeable wood and metal contraption. Meet Chione (Version 1.02)! Isn't she a looker? Well, she might be if you're into watching cranks turn and gears mesh. The machine even makes a nice, conversational clicking sound as the components rotate and pass over one another. It took a lot of junk parts. And of course, as advertised, there's ice cream. Cool, huh?]

[Estelle was just out taking a walk, and getting use to her surroundings. She'd finally procured her normal clothing and was just pretty much taking it easy. She hasn't been around long and has yet to find something to occupy her time. What better way than to get accustomed to your new home? ... Or prison. Or... whatever.

She hadn't been paying much attention to her journal, although she did think she heard some mention of ice cream? It is pretty hot out today. Good thing she wears mostly white.

It's when she's passing the smith that she notices a rather odd contraption. Estelle's curiosity gets the best of her and she comes to get a better look, spotting someone sitting next to it.

With a friendly smile, she approaches Ginji.]

Um, hello. Is this yours?

[Action] We all scream for ice cream.

[Ginji smiles back, not minding her interest in the least. He's dressed as he normally is, a fluffy-collared flight jacket, long pants, and boots even in this summer heat. Well, it's still early. By mid-afternoon even Ginji might have to give up on the coat and go in search of some shade.]

[That's a pretty formal-looking dress, though. He's got to wonder if this girl is from a rich family - it seems like half of his friends from home are.]

Hey there. And yes, it's an ice cream making machine.

[Yeah, Estelle doesn't know the meaning of dressing down.

She looks genuinely interested.]

Oh? How does it work?

It's not too complicated, actually. First off, you've got a cylinder in here with the ice cream mixture...ah...that's milk, egg, sugar, vanilla, and whatever flavor you want. You pack ice around the outside of the cylinder and add in rock salt to lower the freezing temperature of the ice. It creates a cooling effect so the mixture freezes, but not too fast. At the same time, you have to mix it.

[He taps the crank with his knuckle.] So that requires energy going into the machine, either by manually turning this crank or by setting up an electric motor. [Electric motors are still a new and wonderful concept to him.]

What I did was install a system that'll keep the crank turning once it's been started. Anyhow, the energy transfers through here [Ginji points out a series of axles and other mechanisms.]to mesh a series of gears, which wind up turning a couple paddles inside the cylinder - which then mixes the ice cream.

[That's the simplified explanation. And all this when you could technically make ice cream in something as basic as rolling two coffee cans around.]

[She listened very intently to his explanation, eyes following the various aspects of the machine that were mentioned or pointed out.]

[Estelle wasn't exactly a blastia or machine guru, but it was still very interesting!]

Sure do! Chocolate and vanilla.

That's what I was hoping for.

I've got her set up near the smithy. You know where that is, right, Vash? [Of course he does.]

[Nephry misses the announcement about ice cream but she doesn't miss the pilot as she passes by.]

Hello, Ginji. ...My, what is that? [Large metal structure-contraption.]

Good morning, Nephry. [He smiles and gestures with a thumb towards the large metal structure-contraption.] This is Chione. She's an ice cream making machine.

[...It. It's an ice cream making machine...]

[He named it?

He named it and calls it a she. Perhaps it's like a ship, for him. Saphir would love it.]

Well then, are you willing to show me how she works?

[Yes, though he usually tries not to mention it in front of normal people; he slips sometimes. And anyway, there's no help for it now. Chione isn't exactly like a ship, however. He's satisfied with how the ice cream maker turned out in the end, but there's just no comparison. After all, ships - specifically airships - aren't just machines.]

Sure, I don't mind at all. It'll probably make more sense if you take a look for yourself.

[Explaining all the different components can get kind of tedious and wear people out (the ones listening), he's found, so Ginji will just take a moment to pry open the side panel. More gears, more parts, all click-click-clicking along. It seems to be running smoothly enough.] Basically all of this provides energy to the paddles that mix the ice cream. That's stored in the middle cylinder. The melting ice is what cools it down and allows the ice cream to thicken.

[Or is he technically supposed to bow and say "your highness"? He's not too sure, but because he's heard only good things about Natalia since the last time he saw her, he's hoping she won't mind.]

I think I'd like to try some, if you don't mind, Ginji. One should treat themselves every so often!

[Ginji shrugs lightly.] It wouldn't be very satisfying to finish a project if it didn't take some effort. Besides, this really wasn't bad. If there hadn't been so many other things to do, I might've even been able to finish it a little sooner.

[Ginji nods in agreement.] Not at all. I'd be honored!

[A little more than "some", that's "quite a bit". But how many gallons is "quite a bit"?]

... Ice cream? You succeeded in making some? [She's more interested in the mechanics of how he did it without using fonic artes, so there's definitely curiosity to her right now alongside well-hidden awe.]

It definitely seems that way. [Considering, well, there it is.]

Developing the machine was a lot easier than I expected. [He's been increasingly curious about this - electricity and all that. It almost seems possible that they could find a way to bypass fonon consumption on Auldrant and still make machines that work. Maybe.]

It seems that some aspects of living here would perhaps make it easier to operate certain types of technology. [Even if most of it manages to go over her head, she had enough difficulty with fontech and learning how to filter through the journals on her own had taken some time.]

Have you had many come by to take up your offer yet? I imagine that with the warming weather it would call for some attention.

Well, sure. Anything that runs off of electricity would probably function, so long as you can find a way to tap into it. I haven't been able to make any fon machines work, though.

[He wonders if Tear wanted some ice cream, too. Ginji figures she's probably not too interested about the machine in any case.]

Yes. About half a dozen so far, but I wouldn't be surprised to see more later in the day. After all, it'll only get hotter.
